Janet's Intro To Corsets

by Shana Roberts

Photograph of Shana Roberts For those of you who didn't make it to the March meeting (was it that long ago already?), you missed out on an excellent introduction into the world of corsets and foundation garments by Janet. She started off with a little history of underpinnings through the years. The heyday of the corset was in the late 1800's, but they started to come into general use during the early 1700's. All you have to do is look at a picture of a woman from 1870 and you can understand why the modern woman tried desperately to distance herself from the things.

Although &gone&, but not forgotten, corsets are still fairly popular with a great number people. Witness the number of manufacturers out there making corsets, both custom and mass-produced.

Janet was kind enough to bring along a couple examples of custom corsets to show everyone. We also did a demonstration of the overall effect a corset has on ones appearance by drawing an outline of Janet on the "whiteboard" before and after using one. With a good quality corset, one could see as much as a four to six inch reduction in your waistline.

Now I know most of you are sitting there saying how uncomfortable they must be. But to tell the truth, a corset providing three or four inches of reduction is easy to wear all day (well, maybe not the first time you put it on!). Anyone who knows me well, knows I haven't come to a meeting without mine on.
